Ex-chasseur de sous-marins

Bonjour à tous,
Puisque nous évoquons des ex-LCT employés comme bacs civils, pourquoi ne pas parler des chasseurs de sous-marins type SC de construction américaine de 1917-18 en service civil après 1918 ?
J'ai cette photo prise à la sortie de Dives sur Mer (Calvados) sans doute dans l'été 1924 (Je peux la dater par référence aux événements familiaux représentés sur les autres plaques de la boite) :

Il s'agit apparemment d'un ex-chasseur de sous-marins, mais lequel ? Un français peut-être mais j'ignore si les Américains en ont revendus en France plutôt que de les ramener aux USA en 1919...

Bonjour,

Tout à fait d'accord pour votre suggestion; en ce qui me concerne je ne connais que le C26 devenu Jean Argaud en 1920 il aurait été utilisé pour effectuer la traversée Toulon,iles d'Hyères avant d’être racheté en 1925 par Latécoère et le C31 devenu Colonel Casse en 1925 chez Latécoère également; mais il est fort possible que certains chasseur soient signalés abusivement comme vendus à la démolition et aient fait une nouvelle carrière dans le civil. A moins que ce ne soit des SC américains vendus en Europe. Je ne connais pas la provenance de votre chasseur normand.

D'abord, je confirme qu'on lit bien "CHERBOURG" sur le tableau arrière
D'autre part, en fouillant dans les journaux d'annonces légales, on reconstitue l'histoire :
Cet ex-chasseur de sous-marins a été acheté dans une vente des Domaines à Cherbourg vers mars/avril 1921 par un individu se faisant appeler "Comte Luys de Norfalk". Il a fait franciser le navire sous le nom d'Enigma. Mais c'était en réalité un escroc qui a payé avec de l'argent emprunté qu'il n'a pas remboursé. D'où une nouvelle vente aux enchères le 25 août 1921 du yacht Enigma. Le bateau n'avait pas bougé de Cherbourg.
Enigma est de nouveau vendu aux enchères (à Deauville cette fois) le 14 août 1924 suite à une liquidation de société. C'était peut-être celle qui exploitait la ligne maritime Le Havre-Dives.
Tout cela pour l'anecdote mais il va falloir chercher parmi les chasseurs rayés au début 1921.
On va peut-être y arriver !

Ce que dit Navsources du Jean ARGAUD-SC172-C26-VP108-V88:

" Laid down in 1916 as SC-172 by the Matthews Co., Port Clinton, OH; Transferred to France 22 December 1917 as C-26; Departed Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the Azores, under tow by the tug Gypsum Queen (SP 430), the proceeded to France in convoy with other SCs, escorted by the patrol yacht Rambler (SP 211. Sold November 1920 to and named Jean Argaud and operated between Toulon, France and Hyères Islands; Sold in 1925 to Air France and used as a seaplane break-down vessel between Port-Vendres, France and Alicante, Spain; Requisitioned by the French Navy 10 September 1939 and renamed VP-108; Renamed V-88 in 1942; Scuttled 9 November 1942 at Oran, Algeria and later refloated; Removed armament in December 1944; Sold for scrap 8 November 1946.".....

Bonjour à tous,
Je reviens sur Enigma (qui porte bien son nom !).
Dans les affiches annonçant sa vente aux enchères en 1921, il est précisé qu'il a été construit en 1918 et sur celle de 1924, qu'il a été construit dans l'état de New Jersey.
En reprenant le dictionnaire de J.-M. Roche, on ne trouve que deux chantiers dans le New Jersey pour les SC français :
Mathis Yachts à Camden : 13,14 et 22 pour mémoire (construits en 1917); 64, 69, 76, 77, 80 en 1918
Elco boat à Bayonne : 49, 50, 51 et 57 (tous en 1918)
En éliminant ceux dont le sort après 1921 est connu, la short list se réduit au 64 et au 76 mais :
- le C64 aurait été démoli à Brest en 1922
- le C76 était à Rochefort en novembre 1920 puis aurait été démoli à Brest (sans date).
J'ajoute que rien n'exclut à ce stade qu'il s'agisse d'un navire de la marine américaine (Il faudrait savoir s'il en est venu en Europe).

je viens de jeter un coup d’œil sur les DM que j'ai consulté et qui concernent les ventes des surplus après 1918.
Beaucoup de ventes de navires dives mais pour les chasseurs peu de chose :
- C 52 vendu à Cherbourg le 03/11/1920 pour 60.000 F au Ministère de l'Instruction Publique.
- C 37 (coque seulement) le 18/05/1922 pour 2.500 F à Mr. Texier (Fouras)
- C 54 le 20/06/1922 pour 5.000 F à Mr. Michel (Paris)
- C 5 le 24/08/1922 pour 12.000 F à Mr. Voisin (Issy les Moulinaux)
- 31/07/1931 : C 69 perdu au mouillage de l’île de Groix lors de son remorquage vers un chantier de démolition.
- 27/02/1936 : C 109, vente pour démolition
- C 97 vendu à la démolition le 08/10/1936
- 29/05/1940 : C 79, à Toulon, est à remettre aux Domaines.
12/04/1940 : C 107 coulé dans la Loire par abordage.

Pour d'autres j'ai les dates de condamnation mais pas le sort final.

"C 5" vendu à Monsieur Voisin, Issy les Moulinaux, est identique au "Ariel", vendu de Gabriel Voisin, Cannes.

Bonjour à tous,
Intéressante piste soulevée par Alain pour Enigma.
J'ai retrouvé sur le site Persée un compte-rendu du procès en correctionnelle de notre escroc. Il est dit qu'il avait acheté Enigma à Cherbourg pour 60 000 F en décembre 1920 au service de liquidation des stocks. Cela ressemble bien au C52 (mais celui-ci n'a pas été construit dans le New Jersey)
